Perennials: grow from seeds

The choice of planting material for perennial ornamental crops increases with the onset of the summer cottage season. However, the cost of varietal seedlings often "bites", but you should not give up growing the crop you like. The way out is to get perennial plants from seeds.

Gaillardia belongs to the family Compositae. The varieties of this perennial ornamental culture are combined under the name Gaillardia large-flowered hybrid. In spring, the plant forms a rosette of elongated leaves, and at the beginning of summer, long, strong peduncles. Flowers are collected in large baskets, their color is dominated by yellow-orange and brown shades.

One of the ways to reproduce Gaillardia is to sow seeds in the ground in a permanent place or in seedling beds. In the latter case, you will have to transplant seedlings into flower beds. Gaillardia looks good in mixed groups, rutaria and rock gardens.

Perennial flax belongs to the family of the same name and is a plant 30–75 cm high with rather small light blue flowers (there is also a white-flowered form). This plant is highly regarded for its long-lasting flowering. Flax seeds give good shoots, they can be sown directly to a permanent place or for seedlings - in a greenhouse. Seedlings bloom in the year of sowing.

Lychnis, or adonis, or dawn, - unpretentious winter-hardy herb of the clove family. There are about 35 species, but the most interesting for the summer resident are the chalcedony, sparkling, Hage, Siberian lichens.

Likhnis chalcedony forms a plant 1 m high, its straight shoots with elongated leaves end in dense umbrella-shaped inflorescences, consisting of small scarlet, pink or white simple or double flowers. The plant blooms in June-July. Lichnis has a sparkling carmine-red flowers. Likhnis Hage in July-August forms inflorescences with a diameter of 6-8 cm. There are forms with dark red leaves and cherry flowers. Siberian lychnis is a plant 50 cm high, blooms in May-June, flowers of different colors are collected in large inflorescences. Garden forms with white and red double flowers are very interesting.

The seed breeding method of lychnis is not at all complicated. Sowing seeds can be done in spring, summer, autumn. Seedlings are planted according to the scheme 20 x 20 cm, they are grown for 1 year and then transplanted to a permanent sunny place (for 5-6 years).

Pyrethrum pink - frost-resistant culture, forming a branched bush up to 90 cm high with dissected feathery leaves. Single chamomile-shaped simple or terry inflorescences-baskets on long peduncles look very elegant in a flower garden.

The seed method of reproduction of pyrethrum gives a good result, it is used mainly for non-double forms. Seeds are sown in early spring, in March. After a year, the seedlings are suitable for planting in a permanent place (according to the scheme 30 x 30 cm). From pyrethrum, you can create beautiful groups, bright spots, or include in the composition by planting a flower garden in the background.

Skeleton purple - a spectacular rhizome plant, like the previous species, belongs to the Asteraceae family. The height of this herbaceous giant is 145–150 cm. Its straight shoots branch in the upper part, the leaves are lanceolate, with a jagged edge. The inflorescence is complex: small pink-lilac flowers are collected in small baskets, which are combined into shields. A beautiful time for the stethoscope comes at the beginning of August.

It is not difficult to get new plants of stethosis using the seed method. Sowing seeds in open ground is carried out in spring or autumn. The plant is winter-hardy, prefers a bright area with well-cultivated fertile soil. Due to its high growth, the slope can be used to decorate unsightly garden buildings.

Physalis Franchette, or bubble worm, - an unusual member of the nightshade family. This winter-hardy herb 80 cm high with a creeping rhizome does not look particularly elegant during flowering: the white flowers that form on numerous shoots do not look very attractive, but when they wither, the fruit appears - a rounded red berry resembling a cherry.

It is surrounded by a bright orange cup, which has grown in the form of a flashlight. Thanks to her, an unusual effect is created. Physalis Franchetta is easily propagated by seed.

Echinacea - a plant of the Asteraceae family, forming a bush 70–100 cm high. A powerful rhizome is located in the soil. The stems of the plant are strong, the stem leaves are sessile, the basal leaves are long-petiolized. Inflorescences are crimson-dark red, simple, double or semi-double baskets with a diameter of 10 cm. The plant blooms almost all summer.

Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in February-March. In May, seedlings are planted in the ground, maintaining a distance of 25-30 cm between them. Echinacea is suitable for a bright place with nutritious soil. With the seedling method, the plant blooms in the year of sowing.

Care in the autumn-winter period

In autumn, the entire upper part of the plant should be removed, if necessary, cover the rhizome to protect it from frost. Fallen leaves of trees, spruce branches are suitable for this purpose.

Some perennials (such as dahlia, tuberous begonia, argiranthemum or flax) cannot withstand the harsh climatic conditions and must be stored in a suitable room during the winter.

It should be moderately moist, cool and well ventilated. During the storage period, it should be checked whether the root system has begun to rot, whether the flowers have suffered from rodents and other pests.

In home gardens, primroses, rudbeckia (plants with yellow flowers resembling chamomile in shape), irises (which are characterized by original shades of flowers), viols, peonies, hazel grouses, phlox, lupins, asters are easily grown.

Each of them has its own characteristics regarding cultivation, but the basic rules work for any plant.
